CBHS will get their butts kicked in 2013. They are not a shaddow of the team in 2012. A number of their stars left school in 2012 leaving a massive hole in the crucial 9 and 10 positions in particular. They don't have a Fletcher Smith or Anton LB or players anywhere near that level. Christs College will break their 12 year loss record against CBHS in 2013. I note with interest that Smith is already dominating senior club rugby in Canterbury in just his first year out of school. Not one of the previous big name 10's to come out of this school has had such an impact at senior level in his first year. I suspect we are on the verge of something quite special with this boy.

The Auckland competition is tough and competitive, with potential upsets always on the cards, no different in the 90's and today. The competition was not weak, kelston was probably just more consistent. Otahuhu coached by Hogan Chapman won the final with an inspired performance from Orene Aii drop goal from wide out, the first for a Co-ed school.St Peters won the competition after a superb u15 team previously. And now St Kents are creating a legacy with a 7 days a week training regime. Prior to the finals set up Kelston dropped only one game -a draw with St Kents to win and they also shared a title with AGS. While importing/poaching players maybe considered the way to go, the real deal is the development of your own players and the ability of the coaches to get the best out of their players and develop a game that compliments the players.....that was all kelston aimed for. The Sacred-kelston semi final was a historic game, as SHC had taken the Moascar Cup from Kelston and they regained the cup [first time a team had lost and regained the cup in one season]to win the semi to meet St Kents in the final.

I played 2001 and 2002, we finished top of the table both years and lost the semis, 2001 to kings , 2002 to Auckland Grammar! Because the change to system and regionals, the auckland comp only submit the winner of comp . Both years our team was filled of rep players, you could most likely name a Auckland secondary schools a+b team respectively, but what the artical out lines, but hasn't boosted about, is how many other schools in Auckland has done what kbhs between 95-05!! None! #justsaying! Much respect to the other schools and their achievements!#rednblue

Is it testament to how strong the overall competition was back in the 90's that no Kelston side truly dominated and went undefeated? Or was the competition actually weak and in turn Kelston nurtured just enough quality talent year after year to monopolise the 1A grade? Note- 2 teams in the last 3 years have gone through 1A & Top 4 unbeaten + Sacred Heart and MAGS had undefeated round robin seasons in 2011 and 2008 respectively.

Hi Kent,

Thanks for your message. Mr Palavi the coach of Wesley at the time told me Jonah did not play that game so what we have here is a us against them thing. Therefore what I will do is make note of your point and let the readers decide. I guess given Wesley lost that day their recollections might be very different!

As an aside could you please send me the results of that 1993 team. I have been doing some research on the Moascar Cup and have some missing scores from that time. I could also upload a team photo on facebook if you like. Good luck with the reunion.

Regards,
Adam
